ATP (adenosine triphosphate) stores chemical energy in its phosphate bonds. When the terminal phosphate is removed (ATP → ADP + Pi), energy is released to power cellular work such as active transport, protein synthesis, and muscle contraction. Cells regenerate ATP mainly from the chemical energy in food during cellular respiration. In plants, light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis also produce ATP.
